U.S. would reap billions from $1 cigarette tax hike

 WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Adding a $1 per pack tax to cigarettes could raise more than $9 billion a year for states, health advocates said on Wednesday, and a poll released with the study shows Americans would support such a tax.

  1. OH enough with picking on smokers already. Enough. Pick on your own vices—a fat tax would be appropriate for most Americans, from what I can see. I’ve just gotten back to the states on a visit after a long absence, and it really is the fattest nation I’ve ever seen.

    • Better yet, maybe the federal government should learn how to cut their own budget instead of increasing their own payroll. The only job growth going on is in the federal government itself. So leave the smokers alone and lay off taxing the twinkies. The government has to deal with their own vices and spending and shouldn’t be worrying about what we spend out money on.
