Government to cut its emissions 28%

WASHINGTON — The federal government, the nation’s largest energy consumer, will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 28% over the next decade, the White House will announce today.

“It’s a real opportunity to lead by example,” says Nancy Sutley, chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). “And not just for the environment but to spur innovation and create jobs and savings.”

Haiti Aid Efforts Go Awry in the ‘Convoy to Nowhere’

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti—Scott Lewis hoped to deliver more than one million meals to Haitians on Wednesday via a 15-truck convoy brimming with beans and rice.

Instead, “It was the convoy to nowhere,” Mr. Lewis said. Well after dusk, the 52-year-old founder of a U.S. disaster-relief organization had barely delivered any food, other than some bags left at a missionary hospital, and a few more bags that got looted from the convoy as it crawled along crowded streets

Pelosi would back spending freeze if it also applies to defense

Bin Laden blasts US for climate change

CAIRO (AP) – Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called in a new audiotape for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming.

In the tape, aired in part on Al-Jazeera television Friday, bin Laden warns of the dangers of climate change and says that the way to stop it is to bring “the wheels of the American economy” to a halt.

He says the world should “stop consuming American products” and “refrain from using the dollar,” according to a transcript on Al-Jazeera’s Web site.
