Most powerful hurricanes on the rise

The number of major Atlantic hurricanes per year may almost double by the end of the century in response to global warming, according to a new study.

A team of hurricane researchers suggests that damage from a larger number of very strong — Category 4 and 5 — hurricanes is likely to outweigh a projected decline in less-intense storms

Russia warns against rushing to Iran sanctions

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on Tehran to work constructively to allay Western fears over its nuclear program but said world powers should take a sober approach and beware of pushing Iran into a corner.

“If our logic is to punish Iran, or if we take up the posture of the offended … this will not be a sober approach,” Lavrov told reporters at a news briefing

UK terrorist threat level raised to ‘severe’

  The UK terror threat level is being raised from “substantial” to “severe”, Home Secretary Alan Johnson has said.

The new alert level means a terrorist attack is considered “highly likely”. It had stood at substantial since July.

UN climate change expert: there could be more errors in report

Dr Rajendra Pachauri dismissed calls for him to resign over the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change’s retraction of a prediction that Himalayan glaciers could disappear by 2035.

But he admitted that there may have been other errors in the same section of the report, and said that he was considering whether to take action against those responsible

Obama Seen as Anti-Business by 77% of U.S. Investors

 Jan. 22 (Bloomberg) — U.S. investors overwhelmingly see President Barack Obama as anti-business and question his ability to manage a financial crisis, according to a Bloomberg survey.

The global quarterly poll of investors and analysts who are Bloomberg subscribers finds that 77 percent of U.S. respondents believe Obama is too anti-business and four-out-of-five are only somewhat confident or not confident of his ability to handle a financial emergency

Haiti earthquake: U.S. army prepares Guantanamo Bay for waves of refugees

The U.S. has begun preparing Guantanamo Bay for Haitians migrants in case of a mass exodus  spurred by the earthquake.

Officials confirmed that about 100 tents, each capable of holding 10 people, have been erected already
